Great book! Used it to lead a study for my men's group. Really challenging and pushes you to separate biblical truth from worldly wisdom on financial issues. If you're looking for something to make you feel good about living a luxurious life while imagining that is God's purpose in blessing you financially, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. If you want to really understand how God calls us to invest the blessings he provides us then check out this book.
Very good book. It should be titled, "Being a Good Steward of All God's Stuff" because it deals with so much more than money. Alcorn discusses solid ways of thinking that will change how the reader sees their interaction with the stuff God has entrusted to them. Everything from money to possessions to children and relationships. I also read Alcorn's "The Treasure Principal" a few years back, but didn't enjoy it like this one because that one seemed focus on giving alone. This one encompasses much more. Again, probably mis-titled, but a great book.
This book was recommended from materials I studied with Crown Financial. Between those aforementioned materials and this book, my view of finances has had a paradigm shift of sorts. I have always avoided money about books by Christians for two reasons. 1) They are usually unbiblical "health and wealth" gospel, "get rich quick", "God is my slot machine" type books written for greedy American Christian audiences, or 2) they are written to give you a guilt complex in order to reach even deeper into your pockets to contribute to the Kingdom - read between the lines - to their church or para-church organization. THANK GOD, THIS IS NEITHER OF THESE TYPES OF BOOK! I love the fact that this book saturates itself in Scripture and helps us wrestle with where we are laying up treasure.
This book has opened my eyes to God's thoughts about His money and how I am to take care of it. If you struggle with money management.....get it! If you do well with money management.....Get it. Take notes, have your bible open and read a page or two a day and study this topic. It's amazing!
I didn't know before this book that my tithe money should come off the gross amount of my check and not the net amount. I have made the change of tithing from my gross and God continues to bless me with all of my needs and I still have money left over for plenty of wants. It's a powerful book and different ideas from the book run through my head often.
The book was in great shape when I received it. As for the content, Randy Alcorn did a great job of using scripture to address issues in our society...like materialism, pursuit of wealth and he challenged you to have a Christ-centered focus on money. As a financial adviser I would have liked more examples of biblical wisdom practically applied to your financial life.
There are so many strategies for getting rich and making it big. But God's plan is simple: give a tithe to church and save a tithe and do it consistently. In that way you are building the kingdom and building wealth. Building wealth also means working with experts to find the best investments, and working with the best charities or churches to make sure that they are good stewards. So it is a very long term and accountable stand. Randy Alcorn has other information to help make a well rounded approach to all aspects of handling money.
We have had a discussion about money in our church, and this answers questions to the open-minded individual who wants to know. Scriptually sound.
